250th ANNIVERSARY MEDALLIONS

Kent’s Bicentennial (1989) Medallions are 1½” in diameter with an ironmaster on the front.  Clad in leather apron and knee breeches, he stirs the molten ore in one of the charcoal-fired furnaces active in the town in the 18th century.  There is an old fashioned water wheel in the background and tobacco leaves ornament the border.  The back shows a crest that incorporates many features of past and present Kent.  On the top band a crown represents the British rule under which the town was founded, and arrows and tomahawk honor the Native Americans who then resided in the area.  The ring of stars evokes the flag of the 13 colonies that elected their first president in 1789, the 50th anniversary of Kent.  The central band contains references to the churches and schools of the town, and an open book displays a motto extolling the Yankee virtues of Faith, Wisdom and Industry.  The lower band shows an old furnace and water wheel, the Civil War Monument that stands in the center of Kent, and the new Town Hall that was inaugurated in 1989 - all framed by the trees and hills of Kent’s landscape.  The mountain laurel in the border is Connecticut’s state flower.

The medallion’s design was donated to the Town by Paul Suttman, a sculptor, who lived in Kent from 1985 until his death in 1993.

The medallions are available in bronze ($5), numbered .999 fine silver ($20), and a presentation set with silver, bronze and gold-plated medallions ($40), and can be purchased through the Town Clerk’s Office.
